Atlanta City Council Member Amir Farokhi to Host “ATL + Economic Security” Event with Andrew Yang, Shirley Franklin

WHO: Andrew Yang, Entrepreneur and Founder of Humanity Forward; Shirley Franklin, Mayor of Atlanta (2002-2010); Amir Farokhi, Atlanta City Council, District 2

WHAT: Armchair Conversation on Economic Security

WHEN: Wednesday, Dec. 16 from 3-4 p.m.

WHERE: Dancing Goats, 650 North Avenue NE

BACKGROUND: Council member Amir Farokhi is hosting a conversation on guaranteed income, voting, and economic security in Atlanta featuring special guests Andrew Yang and former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. The outdoor event will take place at Dancing Goats, 650 North Avenue NE. Around 25 guests will be in attendance with the full program also available for live stream.

The event is part of the ongoing work of the Old Fourth Ward Economic Security Task Force (https://www.econsecurityatl.org/). The Task Force is a 28-member working group including neighborhood residents as well as national and local leaders. The coalition has met for the past six months to discuss policy solutions for some of the area’s toughest economic challenges, including the possibility of a guaranteed income pilot program, with a full report expected in early 2021.

The day is also timed to highlight the first week of early in-person voting for the Jan. 5 runoff election.

“I’m thrilled that despite all the challenges that come with safely organizing socially distanced events in this time, we were able to bring such a great group of people together to talk about such an important topic,” Farokhi said. “I’m looking forward to discussing economic security and of course, the importance of voting with such an esteemed panel.”

Those looking to watch the event remotely can view it on Facebook @D2Atlanta. For those seeking to RSVP to attend in-person (space limited), go to econsecurityatl.org/events. Face masks will be required, and social distancing measures will be in place.
