Atlanta City Council Member Michael Julian Bond Releases Statement on the Passing of Acting Legend John Amos

ATLANTA —Post 1 At-Large Atlanta City Council member Michael Julian Bond released the following statement after the passing of film and television great John Amos:

“I was filled with heartfelt sadness upon learning of the passing of John Amos, a great actor and Atlantan. He broke stereotypes of Black men in America through his many roles. Before his Emmy-nominated turn in the TV mini-series ‘Roots’ and his best-known role as the patriarch of the Evans family in the classic sit-com ‘Good Times,’ he broke ground as the only Black character, weatherman Gordy Howard, on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”  And I absolutely loved his portrayal of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Percy Fitzwallace  on the “West Wing.” I am honored to consider him my friend, and I’ll miss his kind heart and booming laugh.”
