WHAT: Reception and proclamation presentation recognizing the 100th anniversary of Booker T. Washington High School

WHEN: Monday, Sept. 16, 11:00 a.m.

BACKGROUND: District 3 Council member Byron Amos will host a reception and present a proclamation in honor of Booker T. Washington High School's 100th anniversary. The reception is slated for 11 a.m., and the proclamation presentation is scheduled at the top of the legislative agenda during the full Council meeting at 1 p.m.

Booker T. Washington High School was built in 1924 as the first and only high school for African Americans southeast of the Mississippi River until 1947. Notable alumni include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Lena Horne, Nipsey Russell, James "Red" Moore, Judge Romae T. Powell, Dr. Asa Yancy, Dr. Pearlie Craft Dove, Dr. Louis Sullivan, and Reshad Jones. The high school building was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and continues to serve as a place of education for today's youth in the West End neighborhood. It celebrates its 100th anniversary in the 2024 school year.
