WHAT:  Post 2 At-Large Atlanta City Council member Matt Westmoreland, along with co-sponsoring council members Andrea L. Boone (District 10), Marci Collier Overstreet (District 11), Michael Julian Bond (Post 1 At-Large), and Andre Dickens (Post 3 At-Large), will recognize Oscar Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. for his outstanding contributions to the film and entertainment industry and for being a pioneering African-American performer on film and stage. Westmoreland will present Gossett with a proclamation honoring his commitment and accomplishments during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Atlanta City Council. Gossett will also be presented with a Phoenix Award from the Office of the Mayor in a presentation prior to the city council meeting.

Atlanta City Council
The Atlanta City Council is the chief policy-making body for the City of Atlanta: it acts by considering and enacting all laws that govern the City. The council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City as recommended by the mayor, and it continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations. The Atlanta City Council reviews and has final say on many land-use and zoning matters. Major economic development projects for the City also fall under the council’s consideration.
