Katherine Brown’s 105 Years of Extraordinary Life and Service to the Westside Community to be Celebrated by Councilmembers Byron D. Amos, Michael Julian Bond

BACKGROUND: Councilmembers Byron D. Amos and Michael Julian Bond join the Westside community to celebrate Katherine Brown’s 105^th birthday on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 2454 Scottridge Drive NW from 2 to 5 p.m.

Mrs. Brown has been a pillar of the Westside community since she moved to Atlanta in 1944, taking on leadership roles in local civil and charity organizations, as well as playing an active role in her church. She made history as the first African American president of the American Legion in Atlanta. She also serves as president of Post #574 of the Atlanta Veterans for over 25 years, as well as an assistant president of the M.L. Ragland Youth Choir for 15 years. She also served as a poll manager for the City of Atlanta, Precinct 10F, for more than 25 years. 

Brown is also a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as the Worthy Matron of Peach Chapter #146 P.H.A. for a total of five years. Under her leadership, she has organized chapter parades, fashion shows, fellowship breakfasts, community cookouts, donation drives, and more. She also established the Jennie Cantrell Scholarship for Youth, which continues to be awarded today. 

In her religious life, Brown served as a Deaconess for more than 40 years and taught Sunday School for 15 years at 1^st Corinthians Baptist Church. She continues her ministry as a Deaconess at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church. Her love for her family, church, and community inspires all who know Mrs. Katherine Brown.
