Atlanta City Council President Marci Collier Overstreet Celebrates Approval for a New Hospital on Metropolitan Parkway
 

ATLANTA —Today, Atlanta City Council President Marci Collier Overstreet issued the following statement after Mayor of Atlanta Andre Dickens announced plans for a new teaching hospital at 675 Metropolitan Parkway SW.

Morehouse School of Medicine and Atrium Health have received approval to move forward with plans for a new teaching hospital at 675 Metropolitan Parkway SW, that will include a network of primary, urgent and specialty care designed to reach communities across Central and South Fulton County.

Atrium Health is committing more than $700 million in capital and clinical investment to the hospital and broader care network. The goal is to bring a Level III trauma center with more care closer to where people live— from routine and preventive services to emergency and acute hospital care where it is needed most.

“When the Atlanta Medical Center closed four years ago, it was a shock to the entire city and a painful blow for many of the most vulnerable Atlantans. I immediately sprung into action as a City Councilmember, leading the legislation for moratoriums on any rezoning of the Atlanta Medical Center campus as protest to Wellstar’s disinvestment,” said Council President Marci Collier Overstreet. “Since becoming City Council President, I have continued to lead the Atlanta City Council’s advocacy for a new hospital in Southwest Atlanta, holding consultations with the Morehouse School of Medicine and Fulton County to sanction the agreement. I’m heartened to learn that a vital new link will be built between communities in South and Southwest Atlanta. Tens of thousands of Atlantans and numerous people in South Metropolitan Atlanta will now have more accessible healthcare, with an eventual goal to bring a Level III Trama Center closest to the people who need it most. This is an important first step to serving healthier and brighter futures in Southwest Atlanta. I thank everyone who played a role in reaching this agreement, including City of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Community Development/Human Services Chair Matt Westmoreland, Councilmember Lewis - District 12, Atrium Healthcare, Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice - Morehouse School of Medicine, and the citizens of Atlanta who were resolute in calling for a new hospital in Southwest Atlanta.”
