BACKGROUND: Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter will mark its 40th anniversary with a special Founders’ Luncheon celebrating four decades of helping children and families experiencing homelessness build pathways toward stability and self-sufficiency. The Atlanta City Council has a years-long partnership with the Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter Holiday House, with Councilmembers and staff personally donating thousands of dollars to spread holiday cheer to Atlanta children.

Founded in 1986 by The Junior League of Atlanta in partnership with North Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Day Shelter began as a powerful community response: providing children with a safe place to learn and grow while their parents worked toward employment, housing, and greater stability. 

The Founders’ Luncheon will honor the Junior League members and community leaders whose vision helped launch the organization, celebrate the enduring partnership with North Avenue Presbyterian Church, and look ahead to the Day Shelter’s next chapter. The Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter is proud to recognize Georgia Power as a sponsor of the 40th Anniversary Founders’ Luncheon, supporting this milestone celebration and the Day Shelter’s continued work to help Atlanta’s children and families build pathways toward stability, opportunity, and a brighter future. 

Today, that founding vision has evolved into a comprehensive two-generation approach that serves children and parents together. In addition to high-quality early childhood education and trauma-informed care, the Day Shelter works individually with parents to create personalized pathways toward employment, housing, education, mental health resources, and long-term self-sufficiency.

The celebration reflects what Atlanta does best: Purposeful Philanthropy in Action.

 About Atlanta City Council
