The City of Atlanta Salutes Assistant Chief Carven Tyus’ 32 Years of Dedicated Service to Atlanta Police Department

BACKGROUND: Atlanta City Council will salute Assistant Chief Carven Tyus’ retirement after 32 years of service with the Atlanta Police Department with a proclamation ceremony in Atlanta City Hall on Monday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. The Proclamation is being led by Councilmember for District 10 and Chair of the Council Public Safety/Legal Administration Committee, Andrea L. Boone.

Tyus’ career with the Atlanta Police Department is a legacy of outstanding leadership, compassion, and distinguished public service. Throughout his career he oversaw complex investigations that strengthened public trust and enhanced community safety, as well as preparing the next generation of law enforcement leaders through his leadership experience and commitment to public service.

A native of Barnesville, GA, Tyus joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1993 as a patrol officer in Northwest Atlanta’s Zone 1. He moved up through the ranks as detective in 1999, serving in the Homicide unit and Special Victims unit for 12 years before being promoted to sergeant in 2011, serving Downtown Atlanta’s Zone 5. He served in the Special Victims Unit and Commercial Robbery Unit of the department’s Criminal Investigations Division a year later and was soon appointed as the Commander of the APD’s Hostage Negotiation team. He later served the Criminal Investigations Division as the Homeland Security Commander and the Homicide Commander. He was promoted to Lieutenant for Zone 5 in 2015, then Major as the Commander of the Office of Professional Standards in 2018 and later promoted to Assistant Chief.
