Councilmember Matt Westmoreland Announces Release of City of Atlanta Artificial Intelligence Commission Recommendations

ATLANTA — Last week, the City of Atlanta Artificial Intelligence (AI) Commission announced the completion of its work and the release of its final recommendations, providing a comprehensive framework for the responsible, transparent, and innovative use of artificial intelligence within the City of Atlanta.

“The completion of the Commission’s work marks an important step forward for Atlanta as we prepare for the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence,” said Councilmember Matt Westmoreland, chair of the AI Commission. “These recommendations reflect months of thoughtful collaboration and public engagement focused on ensuring innovation is balanced with accountability, transparency, and the public interest.”

The AI Commission was established to examine the growing role of artificial intelligence across government operations, public services, economic development, and community impact. Over the course of several months, Commission members met publicly, reviewed emerging industry standards and policy approaches from across the country, and gathered input from technology leaders, academic institutions, community stakeholders, and city departments.

The Commission’s recommendations focus on establishing governance standards for AI usage, promoting transparency and ethical safeguards, supporting workforce preparedness, and encouraging innovation that benefits Atlanta residents and businesses alike.

“These recommendations provide guidance for how Atlanta can lead responsibly in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence,” Westmoreland said. “The work completed by the Commission positions the city to approach emerging technologies thoughtfully while maintaining public trust and ensuring these tools serve our communities effectively.”

The recommendations will be introduced through legislation on Monday, June 1, with additional administrative actions to follow in coordination with city leadership, stakeholders, and relevant departments. Additional updates regarding implementation efforts are anticipated in the coming months. The City of Atlanta Artificial Intelligence Commission’s final report and recommendations can be read online.
