BACKGROUND: Councilmember Michael Julian Bond hosts the unveiling of the Vietnam War Memorial on Sunday, March 29—National Vietnam War Veterans Day—starting at 1 p.m. near the Piedmont Park 14th Street Entrance. This ceremony commemorates the first Vietnam War memorial in Atlanta, honoring the 240 service members from Atlanta and surrounding areas who gave their lives in the Vietnam War.
The ceremony begins with a parade through Piedmont Park in tribute to National Vietnam War Veterans Day, followed by a ribbon cutting and unveiling of the memorial. Speakers include WSB-TV news anchor Candace McCowan as emcee, District 15 Georgia State Sen. Ed Harbison, representatives from the offices of U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff and Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District Rep. Nikema Williams, and more.
Councilmember Bond advocated for the installation of the memorial for over a decade through championing legislation, building coalitions, and partnering with Sons of Atlanta since 2015 to ensure that the sacrifices of local Vietnam War veterans and fallen service members would never be forgotten. The official groundbreaking of the memorial was held on May 16, 2025, and celebrated by Councilmember Bond, Mayor Andre Dickens, representatives of Sons of Atlanta, and local veterans and their families. The centerpiece of the memorial is a wall engraved with the names of the 240 Vietnam War fallen service members from Atlanta and eight other cities in Fulton County. Commemorative bricks with names of local Vietnam War veterans lead up to the memorial.
“This memorial is our promise to remember,” said Councilmember Bond. “It is a place where stone and steel will forever echo the names and legacies of Atlanta’s fallen.”
