WHO: District 3 Councilmember Byron Amos
WHAT: Simpson Road Trojans Proclamation Ceremony
WHEN: Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, 1 p.m.
WHERE: Marvin S. Arrington, Sr. Council Chamber, 55 Trinity Ave. SW
BACKGROUND: Atlanta City Councilmember Byron Amos commemorates the trailblazing Little League team the Simpson Road Trojans with a proclamation ceremony on Monday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. in the Marvin S. Arrington, Sr. Council Chamber.
Formed in 1962 as the first African-American Little League Baseball team during the Jim Crow Era, the Simpson Road Trojans is made up of 16 players ages 12 to 14 with their 16-year-old coach Larry Morrow. They were a self-organized Black Little League team from the Simpson Road Housing Projects who were able to buy their own uniforms through community fundraising. The team faced many violent, racist attacks after games and even in front of their homes just to play in Little League. They became the first Black Little League team to be invited to the Little League World Series in 1963, although a last-minute dispute on a player’s age by Little League officials—which was fought by civil rights icons, Black sports organizations, politicians, and neighborhoods—cut off their chance to attend the tournament.
Nine out of the original 16 players are still alive today, and four did grow up to play in professional baseball and football leagues.
