BACKGROUND: Atlanta City Council members Antonio Lewis, Andrea L. Boone, and Jason Dozier join former District 12 Council member Derrick Boazman, former City of Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, and Georgia 5th Congressional District Representative Nikema Williams as speakers in the Michael Langford Drive, SW Street Unveiling Ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul AME Church, 1540 Pryor Road, SW.
Atlanta City Council introduced ordinance 25-O-1436 to rename a portion of Pryor Road, SW, and Pryor Street, SW, from Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard, SW, to Lakewood Avenue, SW, as “Michael Langford Drive” in August. The ordinance was adopted by Atlanta City Council on Oct. 20, 2025.
Michael Langford, Sr., was born and raised in Atlanta and became a grassroots community advocate alongside his brother, Rev. Arthur Langford, Jr., leading him to working in political strategy, community organizing, nonprofit leadership, and public service. He spent eight years serving Atlanta as the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs under Mayor Bill Campbell, assisting thousands of Atlanta residents navigate challenges in their community. He led search missions for the missing children as part of the Atlanta Child Murders Investigation and served on the Atlanta Children’s Memorial Taskforce in 2021.
Langford’s work extended beyond city government as the president of the United Youth Adult Conference, where he was a vocal advocate for equity and inclusion and an inspiring leader, as well as his service on the City of Atlanta’s Anti-Violence Advisory Council, which helped to increase awareness and engagement to empower the community to improve the lives of children and families, and Operation Take Back, empowering Atlanta neighborhoods reclaim safety and unity.
About Atlanta City Council
The Atlanta City Council is the chief policy-making body for the City of Atlanta. It acts by considering and enacting all laws that govern the City. The Council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City as recommended by the mayor, and it continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations. The Atlanta City Council reviews and has the final say on many land-use and zoning matters. Major economic development projects for the City also fall under the council’s consideration.
