BACKGROUND: Atlanta City Council will commemorate District 7 Council member Howard Shook’s 24 years of service on the Atlanta City Council on Monday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. in Marvin S. Arrington, Sr. Council Chamber, 55 Trinity Avenue, SW.

Howard Shook has served District 7 on the Atlanta City Council since 2001. In that time, he became a leader in the City’s fiscal and infrastructure oversight. His thoughtful, analytical approach to budgeting, finance and policy guided Atlanta through complex fiscal challenges and earned the City’s first AAA credit rating.

His leadership is also seen through his seven years as the Chair of the Finance/Executive Committee and four years as the Chair of the City Utilities Committee. He has served on all seven of the City Council’s standing committees, and currently serves on the Committee on Council, City Utilities Committee, Zoning Committee, and Chair of the Finance/Executive Committee.

Before serving on the Atlanta City Council, Shook served in leadership positions in several neighborhood and community groups including president of the Ridgedale Park Civic Association, chair of the Buckhead Neighborhood Alliance, member of the Board of Buckhead Area Transportation management Association and City of Atlanta’s Gentrification Task Force, and co-founder of the Partnership for Better Government.

 

About Atlanta City Council

The Atlanta City Council is the chief policy-making body for the City of Atlanta. It acts by considering and enacting all laws that govern the City. The Council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City as recommended by the mayor, and it continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations. The Atlanta City Council reviews and has the final say on many land-use and zoning matters. Major economic development projects for the City also fall under the council’s consideration.
