Atlanta City Council Authorizes $1.8M Grant for
Lenox Road Pedestrian Safety Improvements
ATLANTA—The Atlanta City Council authorized acceptance of an approximately $1.8 million Surface Block Grant Award from the Georgia Department of Transportation for construction of pedestrian safety improvements and a shared-use trail along Lenox Road between SR 141 (Peachtree Road) and East Paces Ferry Road, near the Lenox MARTA rail station (25-O-1588).
Other items approved by Council include:
- A resolution executing an 18-month, $10 million cooperative agreement for winter operations and maintenance services at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (25-R-4085).
- A resolution authorizing execution of a two-year, $2.5 million agreement for development of the City of Atlanta Comprehensive Transportation Plan and associated scope (25-R-4001).
- An ordinance allowing labor organization dues from member employees to be paid through payroll deduction (25-O-1550).
- A resolution urging Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly to declare a state of emergency to ensure continuity of food assistance for SNAP recipients in the state until federal government operations resume. This item was an immediate consideration.
Items introduced for consideration include:
- A resolution allowing the issuance of $35 million in revenue bonds to finance a portion of the costs of acquisition, construction and equipping of the 218-bed multifamily rental facility Trinity Central Flats.
- An ordinance authorizing approximately $5.5 million to complete remaining airfield repairs at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
- An ordinance authorizing a $500,000 donation to the nonprofit Intown Collaborative Ministries, Inc. (“Intown Cares) to support place-based street outreach and rehousing.
- An ordinance approving the purchase of approximately 2.5 acres from The Conservation Fund for approximately $351,000, for expansion of the City’s outdoor activity center in southwest Atlanta.
- An ordinance authorizing a $350,000 donation to the nonprofit Medici Road, Inc. to provide neighborhood partnership capacity building services to revitalize neighborhoods along the Campbellton Road corridor.
- A resolution urging the Department of City Planning to remove all off-street parking minimum requirements citywide as part of the Zoning 2.0 rewrite.
- A resolution requesting that the Georgia General Assembly explore the establishment of statewide free or reduced-rate parking for vehicles displaying valid disabled person parking placards or license plates, to promote accessibility, equity, and economic participation for individuals with disabilities.
- A resolution asking the Georgia General Assembly to promote and explore the feasibility of increasing funding for transit systems through state fees and tourism-related revenue to promote regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and expand access to economic opportunities.
- A resolution asking for a study analyzing the cost of administering and enforcing the City of Atlanta’s right-of-way closure permit fees, including sidewalk and lane closure fees, are equitable, reasonable, and commensurate with the costs of regulation.
- A resolution authorizing an approximately $161,000 donation to the Partnership for Southern Equity to support the Mayor’s Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative.
The City Council presented proclamations and recognition to Dr. William Cleveland and Darren Myles.
About the Atlanta City Council
The Atlanta City Council is the chief policy-making body for the City of Atlanta. It acts by considering and enacting all laws that govern the City. The Council also approves the operating and capital budgets for the City as recommended by the mayor, and it continually monitors revenues and expenditures for local government operations.
