BACKGROUND: Council member Andrea L. Boone honors William H. Cleveland, M.D. with a Proclamation presentation on Monday, Nov. 3, 2025, at 1 p.m. in Marvin S. Arrington, Sr. Council Chambers, 55 Trinity Avenue, SW.

Dr. Cleveland is the first African-American nephrologist in the state of Georgia. He was part of the first class of African-American men to graduate with a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine after medical schools across the country diversified their enrollment in 1970.  

Dr. Cleveland is the President of Southwest Atlanta Nephrology, PC and Nephronet, LLC, and serves on the LifeLink Foundation Board of Governors. Previously, he served on the Georgia Health Sciences University Board and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. He was also a member of the International Olympic Commission and served as co-Medical Director for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games from 1991 to 1996. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the International Olympic Commission in 1999.

 

About Atlanta City Council
