ATLANTA – Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Julian Bond will honor restaurateur, entrepreneur and jazz music promoter Dante Stephensen for his contributions to Atlanta’s cultural and business life on Monday, August 19.

Stephenson, age 77, first opened Dante’s Down the Hatch over four decades ago.  The Buckhead staple originally anchored Underground Atlanta on Lower Alabama Street in the 1970s before moving to the Peachtree Street location in 1981.  The jazz supper club, famous for its live music, wax celebrity statues, crocodiles, and delicious fondue, closed last month after 43 years in business.

“Dante’s was an Atlanta tradition.  Locals and tourists alike flocked to this unique establishment to experience a taste of the city in a communal fashion,” said Post 1 At-Large Councilmember Michael Julian Bond. “This proclamation is our small gesture of gratitude to Mr. Stephensen for four decades of service to Atlanta.”

Prior to the proclamation presentation in the council chamber, Bond will honor Stephensen with a reception in the southwest atrium on the second floor of Atlanta City Hall at 12:00 p.m.
