Carter Center to host first Community Meeting for Poncey-Highland Master Plan Wednesday, June 17

ATLANTA – Just two weeks after opening an eco-friendly playground in Freedom Park , Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall and the Poncey-Highland community will kick off a four-month master planning effort for the neighborhood from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at The Carter Center.

“For years, residents and business owners have said they want a plan for the future,” said Hall, whose district includes Poncey-Highland. “This is a once-in-a-generation effort to look at Poncey-Hi comprehensively, in its integrity, and in relationship to adjacent neighborhoods.”

2009 has been a landmark year for the neighborhood, with the spring opening of the new playground and community garden, and the fall opening of a new public elementary school, Springdale Park , that will serve its many young families.

Lenore Carroll, president of the Poncey-Highland Neighborhood Association, urged everyone with a stake in the neighborhood to attend the meeting. “We are thrilled that this important project is going forward after several years of anticipation.  All who live, work, and play in Poncey-Highland have a stake in this process, and we need their participation.”

Steve Franklin, owner of Java Vino, Coffee and Wine House, on North Highland Avenue , said the effort provides a “great opportunity to showcase the unique, independent businesses that the neighborhood has to offer and to get everyone involved in planning for their continued success. As a small business owner, I am pleased to see this happening.”

The Atlanta-based design firm of Tunnell Spangler Walsh is leading the planning effort.

Among the topics to be considered during the four-month process are land use issues; traffic calming; greenspaces and streetscapes; historic preservation; and sustainability.

The second community meeting for the master plan, a public workshop, is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Druid Hills Baptist Church . The workshop will include child-friendly urban design activities led by the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Architects. At the end of the morning, children will share their vision for the future of Poncey-Highland with the adult participants in the workshop.
