Greenbriar Mall Announces the Jim Maddox Scholarship Recipients

ATLANTA – Greenbriar Mall announced the three winners of The Jim Maddox Scholarship Program for the 2009 – 2010 academic year.  The students were awarded $2,000 in scholarship money to attend a college or university within the 20-county metro Atlanta area or supported by the state of Georgia.

The scholarship is named for Atlanta City Councilman Jim Maddox who continues to make commendable contributions to the community and to Atlanta’s youths.  For 22 years, the program has awarded high school seniors with scholarships – totaling over $150,000.

The scholarships were awarded to Cheryl Dixon of Westlake High, Adriana Gerena of Creekside High, and Brittany Vadale Sapp of South Atlanta High School.

Selection criteria for the 2009 scholarship recipients were based on writing skills, academic achievements, and community involvement. An awards banquet was held for this year’s recipients on May 20 at the Piccadilly Cafeteria at Greenbriar Mall.

“These are some of the brightest minds in our city,” said Maddox. “It’s an honor to be able to assist these young people in furthering their education.  They are indeed our future leaders.”

Councilman Maddox was elected to the Atlanta City Council in 1977.  He is referred to as the dean of council.  The Morehouse College graduate is a retired contract administrator for Lockheed Aeronautical Systems, where he worked for 34 years. He is also a retiree of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta.
