healthier and more active lifestyle
ATLANTA
– Atlanta City Councilmember Natalyn Archibong will join students of Spelman
College and West End Community in the first annual K!DZ Walk 2012 on
Saturday, April 14.
Registration
will take place from 7 until 8 a.m. inside the lobby of the Camille Olivia Hanks
Cosby Academic Center on the Spelman College Campus, 350 Spelman Lane S.W.
The
walk 1.7 and 3.4 mile walk around Spelman's campus will begin at 8:58 a.m.
The
purpose of this walk is to educate children and families about the dangers of
childhood obesity and encourage everyone to embrace a healthier and more active
lifestyle.
The
walk is intended to be a day of fun for the entire family, where individuals are
given the opportunity to run, play, and engage in various activities. Our goal
for the day is not just to discuss ways to learn how to lead healthier
lifestyles, but also introduce kids to outside activities that allows for
physical activity and movement, which ultimately can lead to a healthier
lifestyle.
After
the walk, attendees will have an opportunity to participate in cooking
demonstrations, exercise activities, such as zuumba and
power yoga, and various sports games. The day will
also consist of nutrition discussions, obstacle courses, and guided meditation,
to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
This
walk has been supported by many outlets, which includes: Novo Nordisk, Bonner
Office of Community Service at Spelman College, and Wellness Center at Spelman
College.
According
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sedentary behavior is an
important component of obesity. The World Health Organization notes that
at least 60 minutes of physical activity, five days a week, can improve
children's health.
