The Children’s School in Midtown receives passing grade for expansion under compromise proposal

ATLANTA – The Atlanta City Council unanimously approved a special use permit that will allow for the expansion of The Children’s School in Midtown.

The school, located at 321 10th Street opposite Piedmont Park , submitted an application to the City Planning Department for a special use building permit in March, 2007.  The permit would allow the school to expand its campus and update the school’s master plan.

“After several months of dialogue, collectively we were able to work out a compromise, which included the school capping its enrollment at 450 students,” said District 6 City Council member Anne Fauver, who represents the area and spearheaded the compromise.  The school currently has 425 students.

The Council today approved granting the school a special use permit (Legislative Reference # 07-O-0637) by a vote of 14 to 0.

Fauver said as part of the compromise school officials also agreed not to develop one of two parcels of land it owns located at the edge of its campus and adjacent to a single family home.

Suggestions from residents who were previously opposed to the expansion were incorporated into The Children’s School new master plan and school officials hired a traffic-engineering firm that recommended a staggered dismissal of students.  The school agreed to implement the split dismissal plan to relieve traffic congestion and considerably shorten the carpool queue.

The Children’s School has been at this location since 1972.

“It is a well-respected Midtown Atlanta institution that continues to be successful due to the enthusiasm and cooperation of the entire school community.  This cooperation exists on every level from students to teachers, staff, administrators, and the school’s neighbors. We should continue this cooperation for the sake of our children and their future,” Fauver said.
