Atlanta City Council to Honor Boys Basketball Class AA State Champions

ATLANTA — The Atlanta City Council will join Council members Marci Collier Overstreet and Matt Westmoreland in honoring the 2019 Class AA state champion Daniel McLaughlin Therrell High School boys basketball team during their April 15 meeting.

The Panthers captured their first state title in school history March 7 after beating Vidalia High School 51-49 at the Macon Coliseum.

Therrell High School is in District 11, which is represented by Council member Overstreet. Council member Westmoreland is a former Atlanta Public Schools board member and teacher.

“We are so proud of each member of the 2018–2019 Therrell varsity men’s basketball team for winning the school’s first championship and we appreciate the service of the entire coaching staff, the faculty, staff, the student body and the families of these young men for helping inspire such a historic season,” Council members Overstreet and Westmoreland said.

Council member Westmoreland added, “My first role in public service was as an Atlanta Public Schools teacher and nothing makes me prouder than witnessing our students reap the benefits of their own hard work.”

Council members Overstreet and Westmoreland are available for interviews Monday. To schedule an interview, email CityCouncilCommunications@AtlantaGa.Gov.

The Atlanta City Council will convene Monday, April 15 at 1 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Atlanta City Hall, 55 Trinity Avenue SW.
