Legislation Requiring Quarterly Report on the Use of Outside Counsel Services and General Operations of the City’s Law Department Vetoed

ATLANTA — Legislation requiring a quarterly report on the use of outside counsel services and the city law department’s general operations was vetoed on June 26 by Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. (Legislative Reference No. 18-O-1179)

The legislation requires the city attorney to seek and receive authorization from the Atlanta City Council prior to filing affirmative litigation in the name of the City as the plaintiff.

In addition, the quarterly report would detail whether the type of work performed by outside counsel was a civil, criminal or transactional matter. It also would require that the report include a brief description of the subject matter.

The legislation was authored by Council President Felicia Moore and sponsored by City Councilmember Dustin Hills, District 9.

The Atlanta City Council will consider overriding the veto during its 1 p.m. regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, July 2 at Atlanta City Hall (council chamber), 55 Trinity Avenue, S.W.
