ATLANTA – Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell will present a proclamation to the Atlanta United Football Club in recognition of their inspiring and incredible 2017 inaugural season and their indelible impact on the City.
Atlanta United FC began play in 2017 as a member of the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. The team plays their home matches at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Over 70,000 Atlantans descended upon Mercedes-Benz Stadium to support Atlanta United FC in its first playoff game ever, against Columbus Crew SC.
Under the leadership of owner Arthur Blank, team president Darren Eales, and coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, Atlanta United earned a trip to the playoffs, the first expansion side to qualify for playoffs since 2009. The team’s success ignited an enthusiasm in the City of Atlanta and the metro region for the sport of soccer. Followers of Atlanta United have been called the greatest fans in all of Major League Soccer.
Council President Ceasar Mitchell said, “As a native Atlantan, I’m proud to have a team here that embodies the values our city holds as evident in the Five Stripes – unity, determination, community, excellence, and innovation.”
