Councilmember Kwanza Hall and Community Dedicate Crosswalk in Memory of Melissa Firestone

ATLANTA- Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall and community members dedicated a city crosswalk today in memory of Melissa Firestone, a longtime advocate for Atlanta’s senior citizens and people with disabilities who passed away in April. The crosswalk is on Linden Avenue in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood.

In his welcome, Hall spoke about Firestone’s work to get curb ramps on Linden Avenue so that she and her neighbors at the Atlanta Housing Authority’s Cosby Spear Highrise could access Central Park safely. After her passing, Hall sponsored legislation creating the crosswalks in her memory.

“She may be missing from our community meetings,” he said, “but her spirit is with us and will not be forgotten.”

Other speakers included Scott Barfield-McGinnis, President of the Fourth Ward West neighborhood association; Catherine Buell, President & CEO of the Atlanta Housing Authority; and Sister Elaine Osby, a friend and neighbor at Cosby Spear.

Barfield-McGinnis spoke about Firestone’s many organizational affiliations and the role she played in the life of the neighborhood.

“Like this crosswalk connecting two sides of this street, Cosby Spear to Central Park, Ms. Firestone was the crosswalk that connected many organizations within our community,” he stated.

Full Radius Dance, a physically integrated dance company based in Atlanta, performed to James Bond title music on the crosswalk following public remarks. The number ended with dancers inviting guests onto the crosswalk to join them. Full Radius recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.

After the ribbon cutting, guests gathered in the community room of Cosby Spear to share refreshments and memories of Firestone.
