STATEMENT FROM THE ATLANTA CITY COUNCIL OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS

ATLANTA – The Atlanta City Council Office of Communications sincerely apologizes to Mayor Kasim Reed, Council President Ceasar Mitchell and supporters of legislation to lessen the penalty for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.

This morning, a staffer employed by our social media department mistakenly sent out a tweet stating that Mayor Kasim Reed vetoed the legislation. The tweet was wrong and should never have been sent.

We respectfully apologize for the misinformation that was spread to the media and to the public. Appropriate personnel actions have been taken to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.

We want you to know that this morning’s tweet was in no way politically motivated and should not be taken as such. This unfortunate incident has led to an overall review of our social media policy and the need for stronger safeguards. We would like to thank Mayor Reed for signing this legislation, and members of the media and the public for its continued support.

Dexter Chambers
Director
Atlanta City Council Office of Communications
