Atlanta City Council Authorizes the Purchase of Forested Property in East Atlanta

ATLANTA – The Atlanta City Council this week authorized the purchase of 6.2 acres of forested land located at 770 Shadowridge Drive.

In November 2016, the council approved legislation authorizing the city to procure privately-owned afforested property containing 80 percent or more canopy cover, a minimum forestation standard of 1,000 DBH (Diameter at breast height) inches and/or a minimum of 50 mature trees per acre.

“We have to do all that we can, not only to preserve, but to also increase our existing tree canopy", said District 5 Councilmember Natalyn Archibong.

Atlanta’s tree canopy covers almost half of the city—47.9 percent—according to an assessment released in 2014 by the Atlanta Tree Conservation Commission and Georgia Tech.

The city will maintain the property as greenspace and make it available for public use. Recreational activities on the property will be restricted to those with minimal impact as determined by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. 

The city and local environmentalists believe that an effective method of protecting and maintaining Atlanta’s urban forest is to procure privately-owned property that is already forested and preserve its afforestation in perpetuity.

A major benefit of purchasing afforested property, in comparison to purchasing and planting new trees, is that many trees on afforested property are mature, thus providing a benefit to the city’s tree canopy that would not be provided by a new tree for many years.
