City Councilmember Michael Julian Bond hosts child safety seat checkup and family health fair on Saturday, June 10

ATLANTA – Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Julian Bond will host a child safety seat checkup and health fair from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10 at the corner of Moreland Avenue and Custer Avenue.

The event is free and open to the public.

Participants can learn how to place their child in a car seat correctly. Just stop by with your child and a safety expert will help you with any special needs and questions. The event is co-hosted by the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, Fulton County Police, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the Georgia State Patrol.

“The statics are startling when it comes to child safety and the proper use of car and booster seats,” Bond said. “According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, seventy-one percent is the rate that car seat use reduces the risk of death of infants age 1 and under who are involved in vehicle accidents. Fifty-four percent is the rate that car seat use reduces the risk of death of children ages 1 to 4 years of age. With that said, there’s simply no excuse for parents and guardians not to protect their child.”

According to the Georgia Department of Highway Safety:

Children under age 8 must be properly secured in an approved car seat or booster seat while riding in:

  • Passenger automobiles, vans, and pickup trucks

The car seat and/or booster seat must:

  • Be in the rear seat (some exceptions apply)
  • Be appropriate for the child’s weight & height
  • Meet all federal standards
  • Be installed and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions
